Starting with Small steps

Starting something can be hard. The difficulty however, tends to be in the mind. If I perceive something to be difficult or requires a lot from me, it is easier to become discouraged. When the starting point seems easy, I become motivated to go ahead.

To overcome the fear of starting, I think about the small steps I need to take, in order to take action. To quote Lao Tzu, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” As I write this, I plan on writing a book. The thought of it can be overwhelming. And yet, all I need is to start by writing one page, which turns into two pages, three pages, multiple pages, a chapter, a few chapters, and eventually a book.

I have implemented the “small steps” method in reading books as well. Instead of waiting to have free time in order to read a book, every night before I sleep, I read just one page. Assuming an average book of about 300 pages, I can finish reading a book within 12 months, without ever having to dedicate hours in order to read. Great thing is, I find myself reading more than one page. The crucial action is starting with just one page.

Start small, and eventually that will lead to something big. Start now.
