I have to admit, the title for this post has been my most plain, impersonal and unexciting one so far. Then again, running a business is not always exciting. Developing processes and systems for your business can be mundane and painful – but your business needs them.
One of the side hustles I am working on is in its start-up phase. It has been almost a year working on that side hustle and I have realised that by not having processes and systems in place, I feel lost many times. There are days where I just pick a random task that is important for the business, but with no consistency on other days. Developing a structure to how I run my business has helped me become productive.
If you are running a business on your own, it is even worse as you are probably doing most or all the operational tasks yourself – such as marketing, sales, pitching to clients, invoicing, and website work. This can become frustrating and overwhelming, especially as the business grows.
Developing processes and systems is crucial for the success of a business. Consider them as building blocks for a company that could one day become a multinational company. Having such a structure also makes the daily work more manageable.
McDonald is a well-known example of a company that has developed effective processes and systems. As a result, McDonald is able to service multitude of customers, while maintaining excellent service levels. While writing this – according to Wikipedia – that is 69 million customers in over 100 countries, on a daily basis.
To enable your business to grow, measure performance, and deliver a consistent service to your clients, I recommend developing processes and systems.
